The American Red Cross is donating FREE Smoke Detectors and will train local volunteers to install them for free.

Overton Resident Mary Lou Skaggs noticed that many homes she visits as a volunteer Firefighter were without working smoke detectors. As someone who sees firsthand the devastation a fire can cause, this greatly concerned her. While watching the news, she saw that the Red Cross was providing Free Smoke Detectors in other areas, and the project was born!

The project also relies on local service organizations such as the Moapa Valley Revitatization Project (MVRP), The Moapa Valley Rotary Club, the Local VFW Post, and JustServe.org.

Phase I started in July and involved placing door hangers on homes in the town of Moapa, telling residents to follow the simple instructions to register for the Free Smoke Detectors. They simply need to call 702-397-FIRE and leave their name and phone number.

Requirements to apply for the smoke detectors:

  1. Registration on JustServe.org
  2. Call 702-397-FIRE (3473) to Sign-up for the detectors

Please note that when signing up on Justserve.org, you will not be applying for the free smoke detectors, you will JUST be signing up to Justserve.org. To sign-up for the Free Smoke Detectors, after signing up at Justserve.org,  please call the Moapa Valley Smoke Detector Call-in Center at 702-397-FIRE (3473) and leave you name and phone number.

Local volunteers are needed for Phase II:

Information below was obtained from the Moapa Valley Progress: Volunteers are now needed to participate in the community call center that will be making those calls. Beginning on August 15, during weekday evening time slots, Moapa Valley community members will sit side-by-side in an effort reminiscent of old-fashioned telethons. They will return calls and complete a simple questionnaire for residents of Moapa who have responded that they are in need of the smoke detector service.

The Overton Fire Station #74 is donating space for the call center. Phone logistics and service are being donated by Moapa Valley Telephone Company.

Volunteers can register for a time slot at the call center by visiting justserve.org. Simply search for projects using a local Moapa Valley zip code and you will see available volunteer opportunities.
